Gratitude Strategies as Pragmatic Parameter of Filipino Pre-Service Teachers’ Identity

This study investigated the common gratitude strategies in different situations, which permeated indebtedness as a way of shaping pre-service teachers' identity. Using 15-item Discourse Completion Test (DCT), 22 teachers Province Cavite, Philippines participated this study. An informal interview was conducted to validate gathered data from instrument used. The analysis done through use Cheng's (2005) taxonomy expressions, include eight (8) strategies: thanking, appreciation, repayment, recognition imposition, apology, positive feeling, alerter, and other non-taxonomy-based expressions. results revealed that respondents highly employed 'simple thanking,' reflects simplicity directness Filipino linguistic choice making responses on various occasions. It also found out aside taxonomy-based thanking schemes, used combined 'no-response' strategy. Supported by Woodward’s identity theory, identified strategies, an illocutionary speech act, built participants’ identities with implication their relational socio-cultural patterns language.
